First find out: are you invisible or just far down?
That distinction matters. For a quick first impression, type site:your-domain.ch into Google. If your pages appear, Google knows your website, it just does not rank well yet. If nothing appears, that is a clear warning sign. The operator is not reliable though: Google only shows a subset of indexed pages with it. The dependable answer comes from Search Console.
For everything that follows you need Google Search Console. It is free, it belongs to every website, and it shows you exactly how Google sees your pages. If you have not set it up yet, do that first. Everything else is guessing.

The six most common causes
- The website is simply too new. Google often needs days to weeks before pages of a fresh domain appear in the index. That is normal, not a bug.
- A noindex tag is set. The classic post-launch mistake: the setting from the development phase that locks out search engines was never removed. Instantly visible in Search Console under URL inspection.
- The robots.txt blocks crawling. A single line in robots.txt can stop Google from crawling the whole site. Note the nuance: this prevents crawling, not reliably indexing. A blocked address can still show up in results, though without a useful description.
- No sitemap, no internal links. Google discovers pages through links. A sitemap supports discovery but guarantees neither crawling nor indexing. Pages nothing points to still stay undiscovered for a long time.
- Too little content. A website with three sentences per page gives Google little reason to show it for a search term. That is more often a ranking and quality problem than the sole cause of nothing being indexed at all.
- Wrong expectations about the keyword. Being found for your own company name is easy. Being found for 'fiduciary Zurich' means competing against hundreds of others, and that takes time and substance.
Fixing it step by step
If you do not know the cause yet, work through this order:
- Set up Search Console and verify your domain.
- Test your homepage under URL inspection: is it indexed, is indexing allowed?
- Submit your sitemap (usually at your-domain.ch/sitemap.xml).
- Check noindex and robots.txt, especially after a relaunch or provider switch.
- Build a dedicated page with real content for every important topic instead of stuffing everything onto the homepage.
- For local searches, also maintain your Google Business Profile. We explain how these work together in our post on local SEO in Aargau.
When patience is normal and when you should act
A new website that does not rank after two weeks: normal. A website that does not appear for its own company name after three months: not normal, that is almost certainly a technical issue.
And if the tech is fine but enquiries still do not come, the cause is usually content and structure. That is exactly where we start when we build websites that get found on Google and in AI search. If you are stuck, get in touch. A quick look into Search Console often tells more than hours of guessing.
Common questions
How long until a new website appears on Google?
First pages often within days, but reliable rankings take several weeks to months depending on competition. You can speed up indexing via Search Console, you cannot speed up rankings.
Does it cost anything to be listed on Google?
No. Organic search is free and nobody can buy a position. Only the results marked as ads are paid, via Google Ads.
Is registering my website with Google enough? There is no registration as such. Search Console lets you submit pages for inspection and shows how Google classifies them. Whether and when they get indexed is still Google's decision. Whether they then rank well depends on content, structure and links.
Registering via Search Console only makes sure Google knows your pages. Whether they rank well is decided by content, structure and links.
